Colman Domingo is a patient man. But in the latest promo video for his debut hosting gig on Saturday Night Live this weekend (April 11), the Wicked: For Good co-star has just about had it with high-energy cast member Sarah Sherman.
When Domingo announces this week’s musical guest, Anitta, Sherman excitedly praises the “Sao Paulo” star for having such a “universal” appeal, wondering how many languages she speaks. In perfect accents, Anitta rips off: English, Portuguese, Spanish, French and Italian. “Wow, sounds like I need to spend more time on Duolingo!” Sherman says.
“No, no … absolutely not,” Domingo tells her, snapping, “there’s no language in which that is clever.”
Things don’t go much better for Sherman in the second spot, where Domingo announces himself, prompting the outré comedian to start singing a round of the show’s parody of Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso” in the now-infamous 2024 “Domingo” sketch featuring Ariana Grande, Heidi Gardner, Ego Nwodim, Sherman and Marcello Hernandez.
“You’ve done that every time I’ve said my name this week,” an annoyed Domingo seethes at Sherman. “I’m sorry! I have ‘Domingo’ Stockholm Syndrome!,” Sherman pleads while grabbing the actor’s sleeve. “You’re touching me,” he responds with disdain as Sherman heaves a barrage of air kisses his way.
Things get a bit friendlier the third time around, when Domingo genially asks Sherman useful tips he can use for his first hosting run. “Yes. If you see food in the fridge labeled ‘Sarah’ do not eat it,” Sherman says adamantly. “Well, seems kind of obvious,” Domingo responds.
“So you would think!” Sherman says with clear annoyance, leaning forward to look at Anitta. “I already apologized!” the singer pleads.
Anitta will also be appearing on SNL for the first time, just days after she announced her first-ever collaboration with Shakira on the high-energy, beat-heavy female strength and spirituality anthem “Choka Choka.” The song, which features verses in Portuguese and English, is out now and is expected to get its live debut on SNL this weekend. “Choka Choka” is the second single from Anitta’s upcoming album, EQUILIBRIVM, which will drop on April 16.
Catch Saturday Night Live live on NBC at 11:30 p.m. ET and on streaming on Peacock.
