Wizards Beyond Waverly Place is bringing the magic back for one last season, Disney announced Thursday (April 2), with Selena Gomez set to make her directorial debut on one of four episodes planned for the final installment.

According to the press release, the Wizards of Waverly Place reboot will go into production in the first full week of April. It’ll pick up where season two left off, with leading lady Billie — Janice LeAnn Brown — moving forward after the loss of Gomez’s character, Alex Russo, shortly after finding out that Alex is her mother.
The Rare Beauty founder will direct the third season’s premiere episode, which is billed as a “four-part event” featuring costars David Henrie, Alkaio Thiele, Max Matenko, Taylor Cora and Mimi Gianopulos casting “one last spell” together. And yes, despite Alex sacrificing herself for her daughter and throwing herself into a one-way portal at the end of the second season, Gomez will reprise her role in the last season. To get fans hyped for the next chapter, Disney shared a clip showing Alex’s superhero moment and teased, “Find out what happens next.”
Wizards Beyond Waverly Place premiered in fall 2024 on Disney+. It caught fans of Wizards of Waverly Place up to speed on what the Russo family was up to 12 years after the original Disney Channel show launched Gomez to superstardom. She’d later forge a career as a pop star, charting 46 songs — including No. 1 hit “Lose You to Love Me” — on the Billboard Hot 100 to date.
“This is what gave me everything that I have today, and I’ll never forget that this is where I started,” the singer-actress said at the Los Angeles premiere of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place in October 2024. “It’s the best feeling in the whole world to be able to bring this back for you and to all the people who have never seen it before.”
