Fans call for Foo Fighters Super Bowl halftime show after Dave Grohl goes viral for appearing at game

Fans are calling for Foo Fighters to headline the next Super Bowl halftime show after Dave Grohl was spotted in the audience at this year’s game.

This year’s showdown took place last night (Sunday February 8) at the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, and saw the Seattle Seahawks winning 29-13 over the New England Patriots.

It was Bad Bunny who took to the stage for the halftime show, and the Puerto Rican superstar broke out a huge, lively set featuring appearances from Lady Gaga, Ricky Martin, Pedro Pascal, Cardi B, Jessica Alba and Karol G. He also carried an inspiring message of community and love throughout the set, and went viral after gifting one of his Grammys to a young child.

During one moment of the night, Foo Fighters frontman was spotted and put on the big screen – and soon went viral for his very brief appearance.

He was seen chatting to former BBC Radio One DJ and MTV2 presenter, turned Apple Music host, Zane Lowe. Upon being seen by the camera and projected onto the screens at the stadium, he immediately looked up, gave out an elaborate gasp and a smile, before chugging his bottle of beer.

The NFL then shared the moment on social media, simply describing him as a “legend”, and it has already led to many fans calling for the organisation to consider booking Foo Fighters for next year’s Super Bowl halftime show.

“Dave Grohl in the crowd > half the halftime shows we’ve seen. Ready for his moment fr,” one fan wrote, hinting that he should be booked for an upcoming instalment of the halftime show, while another added: “LET HIM DO THE HALFTIME SHOW”.

“Should’ve brought him out for the half time show,” someone else wrote, while another chimed in: “@foofighters could do such an awesome halftime show”.

Last night, famous faces including Rosalía, Doechii, Ricky Martin, and Jennifer Lopez came forward to share their praise of Bad Bunny’s show, and Zach Bryan and Kacey Musgraves were among those to make a swipe at the ‘All-American Halftime Show’ which was organised by Turning Point as an alternative to the official NFL event.

The latter featured Kid Rock and country artists Lee Brice, Brantley Gilbert and Gabby Barrett as performers.

This year’s Super Bowl has been at the centre of controversy ever since Bad Bunny was announced as the halftime show headliner in September. The Puerto Rican superstar has come under personal attack from the MAGA movement, with Donald Trump calling the decision “crazy” and claiming that he had “never heard of” the rapper.

After the performance, Trump weighed in again and branded it as a “slap in the face” for America.

Foo Fighters have never headlined the Super Bowl, although Grohl did reveal in 2018 that he had been approached by the NFL “multiple” times about it.

While they haven’t yet accepted the offer for the mammoth slot, the band did kick off Super Bowl weekend in 2014 by playing a concert in a New York parking lot.
